The Role of the New Testament in Christian Education

The New Testament, like the Old Testament, is the foundational building block of Christian Education. The New Testament expands upon the Old Testament and provides additional insight on education. It forms and impacts many areas of Christian Education including: goal, focus, extent, content, methods, etc. The greatest impact of the New Testament on Christian Education has been the extent or reach of Christian education, how Christian Education is intended for all people, groups, and nations.

The New Testament forms Christian Education by the following principles:

• Goal of Christian Education – Love for God, People, and Becoming like Christ
o (Matt. 22:37; Matt. 28:19; Eph. 4:11-16; Col. 1:28; Rom. 8:29; 2 Tim. 3:17)

• Focus of Christian Education – Christ and Future
o (Hebrews; Col. 1:15-20; Phil. 3:12-16; 1 Cor. 1-2; 2 Cor. 4:7-5:10; 2 Tim. 2)

• Extent or Reach of Christian Education – Everyone
o (Matt. 28:19; 1 Cor. 9:19-23; Acts 13; Acts 8:26-38; Rom. 1:16)

• Content of Christian Education – All Scripture
o (Matt. 28:20; 2 Tim. 3:16; 1 Tim. 4:6-16; Acts 17)

• Methods of Christian Education – Diversified and Creative
o (The Gospels – Christ used parables, word pictures, live illustrations, & most importantly by example; 1 Cor. 9:19-23; Acts 17; 1 Cor. 12 –
differing gifts and abilities to reach different groups)
o Cross-Cultural – (Eph. 6:5-9; Titus 2:9-10; Col. 4:1; Acts 17)
o Cross-Gender – (Titus 2:1-5)
o Age Appropriate – (John 21:15-19; Luke 18:15-17)
